Gum Disease Treatment

Do you have bleeding or tender gums? These are the symptoms of gingivitis, which can progress to periodontal disease. This may result in potential bone loss and tooth extraction. Periodontitis, or Gum Disease, is the most common cause of tooth loss.

Your gums are the framework for a picture-perfect smile. Periodontics focuses on the health and treatment of gums and bones, working to correct and prevent damage caused by gingivitis, periodontitis or other gum diseases. Maintaining healthy gums strengthens the foundation of your mouth.

Periodontal disease is the number one cause of tooth loss amongst adults. This is because a certain number of people (15-20%) have immune systems that overreact to the bad bacteria in their mouths. When this overreaction occurs, the immune system attacks and breaks down the bone and tissue that surround the tooth. This destruction is not foreseeable and can happen irregularly. None of us knows if we are part of this 15-20% because we can.t usually feel or notice the start of gum and bone (periodontal) disease.

What can begin as a mild irritation of the gums can progress to serious infection and even tooth loss. Most of the early symptoms seem like no more than mild soreness or bleeding in the gum. Early detection of these problems is vitally important. The truth is that only an experienced dentist like Dr. Kaviani, can make this decision.

Common problems associated with gum disease:

  • Long teeth (receding gum lines expose the root portions of your teeth)
  • Discoloured or deteriorating tooth structure
  • Gum depressions (holes in between the teeth in the gum tissue)
  • Infected gum line (discoloration or inflammation of the gum tissue)
  • Tooth loss or tooth movement
  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis)

The effects of gum disease can be damaging to your dental health. However, through proper preventive care and oral hygiene, you can avoid problems associated with gum disease. A preventive program is a cooperative effort by the patient, experienced dentist, and dental hygienist to preserve the natural dentition and supporting structures by preventing the onset, progress, and return of gum disease.

Keep in mind that healthy gums DON.T BLEED. You are the key player on the hygiene team. If you don.t do the essential daily brushing and flossing, the rest of your dental team (the dentist and hygienist) is playing short-handed. And sometimes with everyone fighting the good fight, stubborn plaque and bacteria will require some new maintenance techniques for battling gum infection.

Treatment of gum disease involves an initial consultation with Dr. Kaviani to detect the main problem areas in the mouth. Accurate measurements from six points around each tooth are recorded and a panoramic full jaw radiograph maybe taken to determine which areas have suffered the most bone loss. She will then explain the findings and discuss what the cause is, what necessary action needs to take place, and explain how the initial treatment (Root Planing) will help prevent further progression of periodontitis.

Root planing - Treatment of Gum Disease

Root planing is the sub gingival removal of plaque and calculus containing millions of bacteria from the root surfaces. The hygienist will use an ultrasonic scaler to remove calculus from above and below the gums, and various hand instruments to access bacteria deeper within the pockets. This is performed under local anaesthetic.

Treatment of periodontitis is a lifelong commitment. Even after having treatment with the best gum specialist in the world, it cannot be stressed enough how important it is to follow a strict oral hygiene regime at home to keep periodontitis under control.
